Advanced Placement Scholars
One
hundred fifty-one students
at Fountain Valley High School have been named AP Scholars by
the College Board* in recognition of their exceptional achievement
on the college-level AP Examinations. Only 13.8 percent of the 847,374
students who took AP Examinations in May 2001 performed at a sufficiently
high level to merit such recognition. However, at FVHS 32.5 percent
of the students who took AP Exams received AP Scholar recognition.
Students
take AP Examinations in May after completing challenging college-level
courses at their high school. The College Board recognizes several
levels of achievement based on the number of year-long courses and exams
(or their equivalent semester-long courses and exams). At Fountain
Valley High School, 8 students qualified for the National
AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on all
AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of
these exams. These students (and the university they are currently

These
students have at least one more year in which to do college-level work
and possibly earn another AP Scholar Award.
Most
of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement,
or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than
1,400 institutions award a year of credit (sophomore standing) to students
presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades. There are 33 AP
Examinations offered in 19 subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice
and free-response (essay or problem-solving) questions.
What
does this mean?
The
151 AP Scholars from Fountain Valley High School have completed
at least 53% of their freshman year in college*:
·
74 of the students have completed at least 71% of their freshman
year of college*
·
39 of the students have completed at least 89% of their freshman
year of college*
·
8 of the students have completed at least their entire
freshman year and 42% of their sophomore year*.
