Golden "A"s: motivation or briberty? 2/29/08
The idea of rewarding students for grades is motivational bribery. Sure, money can motivate anyone to do well, but it takes away the true reward of achieving.

Superdelegates: a super idea, or just plain undemocratic? 2/29/08
Is it really fair to have almost 40% of the 2,025 delegates needed to win the nomination come from undecided citizens?

Original ways to celebrate Valentine's Day 2/13/08
Are you sick of sending your usual pre-made valentine cards to your friends and loved ones? Want to be creative and give your valentine a present he or she will remember for a lifetime?

Derelict ship of imagination 2/9/08
I don't care what your GPA is, or what you scored on the SAT. If you were smart enough to make it this far, you're smart enough to appreciate literature.

Dangerous accomplice 2/9/08
Capitalizing on illegal substances to become better and stronger is not only unhealthy but just wrong for so many different reasons.

Student's guide to the primaries 1/18/08
As a student, it is often hard to understand what is going on with politics in our country, and with the upcoming presidential election, things are seemingly much harder to comprehend.

Blackout backlash 12/7/07
The question is, is Edison Week accomplishing its purpose? And is one high school football game really worth all the time, money and hassle?

Give like there's no tomorrow 12/6/07
Is it really necessary to spend and spend and just spend a little more for the holidays?

The cell phone policy 12/26/07
"Put your phone away!" is the most popular quote teachers are caught repeating over and over throughout the day. The rule began to be enforced years back, and as they go by students grow to dislike it more and more.

What not to do in the workplace 10/26/07
After having worked the same job for a year and a half, I resigned my title as assistant manager of a Subway restaurant.

Procrastination: more harmful than helpful? 10/26/07
It seems that you’re having more fun now, but it will affect you in the long run. Trust me, I’ve suffered the consequences.

"Just because we're kids" 10/26/07
I noticed a security guard watching us suspiciously. I wondered why, but I pushed the thought to the back of my head, not thinking anything more of it until he eventually stopped us.

Myanmar: The fight for democracy 10/24/07
I was having a usual morning, eating a bowl of cereal, when suddenly I heard chanting in the living room, "Freedom for the Burmese!"

Deadlines for teachers, too? 10/24/07
It's well known that students complain when teachers do not return their work back or keep them updated on their progress in class. One anonymous student decided on a possible solution for this issue: deadlines for teachers!

Comedian Stephen Colbert for president 10/24/07
Is the 2008 presidential election turning into a big joke? For late night comedian Stephen Colbert, it might as well be one.

AP Exam, Anyone?
5/23/07 | Kevin Truong
After taking an AP course, students are offered the choice to take AP test at the end of the year, summarizing everything covered in class. AP classes are supposed to be college course classes so remembering every single minute detail often poses a challenge.

AP or Not?
5/9/07 | Kevin Truong

In order to allow students to excel, high schools offer classes that are both challenging and demanding. These Advanced Placement, or AP, classes, and Honor classes are what will make up most of my schedule for my junior year.

A Thin Line Between Slim and too Slim
3/27/07 | Caley Albert

Recently, People magazine interviewed Hilary Duff about her recent success, and one of the tabloid's favorite topics, her weight.

The NRA: Protecting Our Second Amendment Rights?

The goal of the NRA, according to their website is to "show your increased commitment to the defense of the Second Amendment."

A Close Comparison
3/25/07 | Elizabeth Pardo
Although it took me less than an hour to read Truman Capote's quirky and thoughtful novella Breakfast at Tiffany's, everything I found in that book was more sustaining and had more magnitude and weight than the movie.

Pleasure on Paper
3/23/07 | Elizabeth Pardo

When I was a child, my mother had stacks and stacks of books everywhere.

Assemblies: A Downward Spiral 3/16/07
This article does not completely represent my feelings toward Fountain Valley High School. As far back as I could remember we've had numerous assemblies that were never quite as entertaining as I had hoped.

A Higher Place 3/20/07
Is higher education really that important to a successful future? Yes, not just because you can walk into an interview and say that you graduated with a degree from some high class university...

Ted Stevens vs. The Internet 3/12/07
I can't go a day--minute, class period--without hearing about someone's online blog. Myspace, Xanga, Facebook...blah blah blah.

That's so gay... 3/7/07
Does this phrase even make sense? Not in any sane way I can think of. I hear people everyday saying, "That's so gay," or "You are so gay," but what does that even mean?

Your ESLRs Ain't My ESLRs 2/8/07
When you see a white ESLRs poster on a classroom wall, do you think to yourself, "Gee, I'm so happy I learned how to be an effective communicator today?"

Sweetest Perfection 2/5/07
You have wasted your life. No, I'm not talking about the semester of feminist literature that you took to sit next to that cute girl, I'm talking about that dessert that you had with your lunch. Ah, dessert!

Money Troubles 1/31/07
By the time you're a senior in high school, you've mastered basic math, algebra, geometry, and explored the depths of calculus.

It's a Miracle...
School Reform Actually Discussed
1/22/07
American students are probably the least equipped to...well, do anything. We are sorely lacking in the difficult examinations and school curriculum other countries subject their students to.

You Can't Always Get What You Want 12/11/07
Yes, in case any of you were worried, there is a meeting held every year to "strategically" plan the upcoming year at FVHS.

Feedback - The VAG: freedom fighters or fallacy writers? 6/14/06
Thanks for your reply!  I feel like I owe you a bit of an apology for being sort of nasty in my last letter; I guess I was just in "death to all injustice however minor" mode and I overreacted a little bit.

Feedback - The VAG: freedom fighters or fallacy writers? 6/13/06
This is Titus Jahng, and I thought I'd like to tell you that I read your response to my article and decided to comment on it, as well.

Feedback - The VAG: freedom fighters or fallacy writers? 6/13/06
This is Michael Remetta and I thought I'd tell you that I read your Wired Baron article and decided to comment on it.

The VAG: freedom fighters or fallacy writers? 6/9/06
A few days ago, I was a little surprised to see that Mr. Maynard had made the front page of a newly published newsletter, "The VAG." Around his picture were the words "Big Brother is Watching You". I myself couldn't quite make the connection. I rather thought "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" would be a more appropriate slogan, but determined not to judge a book - or a newsletter - by its cover, I read on.

Are you a terrible driver? Blame your undeveloped brain! 3/16/06
My mother got her license when she was 14, and she's never been in a serious accident that was her fault. According to scientists at the National Institutes of Health, she should have crashed by the time she was sixteen, and fatally injured herself or one of her passengers. Does this seeming contradiction mean that all of the scientists at the NIH are wrong?

Sobriety vs -3.8 billion 3/15/06
Imagine this: it's a Friday night. Everyone's at the party of the year - including you. What better way is there than to end the week by having a few drinks, partying, and driving yourself home happy?

What...12 months? 3/3/06
Twelve months, 365 days, seems like a long time doesn't it? That's how long the DMV now requires drivers under the age of eighteen to not carry passengers. What's up with that? Why does the government spend more time trying to find ways to annoy teens than fix the state budget?

FVHS really does care for you 3/2/06
I was pleasantly surprised to hear a machine tell me my math teacher thought I was a delight to have in class, but is Teleparent just a drain on the school's already tight budget?

Smoking: sounds silly, right? 2/24/06
I don't find smoking a particularly beneficial habit. I'm not going to preach--but there are practical reasons to never start smoking or, for those who have already begun, to stop.

Journalists, getting the job done 2/23/06
When a disaster strikes there is always the same group of people on the scene before anyone else, sometimes before it occurs. They stand out in the storm, and drive right up to the lines of the fire just to get their story : that's right , journalists.

Happy or miserable, Valentine's Day is here to stay 2/14/06
The ancient Romans celebrated this day to court and express their love...but is it really the same today?

CAHSEE: epitome of "purposelessness" 2/14/06
Is the state pouring money and effort into a test that has no purpose?

Health: a matter of personal responsibility 2/14/06
The nation is constantly seeking new ways to combat problems like obesity and heart disease. But who is ultimately responsible for the poor health trends of American youth?

The CAHSEE returns 2/9/06
Does the state doubt the teaching abilities of high school teachers, especially those at Fountain Valley? Recall that FVHS has exceptional scores on standardized tests.

Re: No more cocaine means it's okay to drink...right? 1/29/06
Great advice! I support all three of your suggestions wholeheartedly, and especially agree that moderation is vital - not only when it pertains to physical well-being, but everything in life.

No more cocaine means it's okay to drink...right? 1/25/06
I don't usually sweat the small stuff; it just isn't something worth losing my mind over. Maybe because I grew up with it as a harmless boost of energy, but there is one little nagging thing that bothers me. Of course, I'm talking about Coca Cola and all other soft drinks out there. Cocaine was taken out of it a long time ago; getting hooked on cocaine wouldn't be the happiest thing on earth...but why take vending machines full of harmless drinks out of schools? Because kids are getting fatter?

Marijuana: Should It be legalized? 3/7/05
Although some believe that marijuana use is an atrocity and that users should be severely punished, I beg to differ.

The flu: Health or homework? 2/17/05
While spring showers pour down, many of us will be facing a nemesis worse than homework. Feverish headaches, sore throats, runny noses--you name it.

Gmail me 2/5/05
Web search, catalog browser, shopping network, newspaper. Google is conquering more and more of the Internet. This time, it’s email.

Geneva Convention: Torture for terrorists? 1/26/05
Every American knows that our military offers one of the most dangerous and self-sacrificing jobs on the face of the earth. Our soldiers stationed in Iraq probably wish that receiving a few “F’s” in school would be their biggest problem. In reality, their daily life is filled more sweat and blood than most of us even care to realize.

Finals: Are they really necessary? 1/24/05
One out of every five students in FVHS has started studying for finals. Not because they know it’s the studious thing to do, but they don’t want to risk the possibility of allowing one exam to determine a grade that could make or break their GPA’s.

Begging to begin later 10/21/05
Starting school again after the months of freedom is always hard. Starting school during summer is even worse. Many schools, especially in the Irvine area, began a trend of starting in August, before Labor Day, which has been the marker for the beginning of school for many years.

Competitiveness shouldn't be taken to the extreme 11/22/04
It's second period, and most students in class are dreading to see the results of their history test. Fearing the worst, they don't want to be the one student who fails.

IM'ing: What's up with that? 11/22/04
“So do you have AIM?” "Yeah, what's your SN?” You've probably heard this conversation before. The chatting program developed by America Online (AOL) has a great influence on teenagers today.
